It's a sad world when it takes an American election to get a South African to vote. It's like we can only live with American myths to make sense of our world. The power of Hollywood, I guess. But yes, let's all get out there and vote, maybe one day we'll have a black president too.
Its funny you say that because I have the opposite problem. I was incredibly saddened by the split in the ANC, an organisation that sacrificed so much for the freedoms we enjoy today. There are people I admire in both the main party and the breakaway one. So this is the third time that Ill be voting, but the first time Im not 100% certain about my vote. Its going to be an interesting lead-up to the elections, thats for sure.
@Amanda Although sad, I do believe change is good. Contrary to what you might think though, I'm voting for Zille. I think the woman has balls of steel and deserves all the backing she can get.

I agree with you about Zille. She is an incredible woman and I'll champion her as an individual, but I disagree with certain fundamental policies of her party. South Africa has a parliamentary system like the UK, not a separation of powers one like the US. As inspirational as Obama's victory may be, South Africans have to bear in mind that we are voting for an organisation not an individual. I am so excited that you are voting though! I know so many people other who haven't before and are finally going to exercise their most basic right. There's hope for us yet!
i'm hoping they have another voter registration weekend soon, I missed the last one...sigh..

Voting is the most important thing you can ever do in this country. Countless men and women gave their lives so that EVERYONE in SA could voice their political will. And no vote outranks any other. It is your one opportunity to be heard. I have voted many times and each time I cry...in memory of those who made it all possible. PLEASE VOTE WISELY (Zille for President!)
