I am *so* glad you actually did this post. I agree with EVERYTHING you said. I actually had a waitering blog a while back under a psuedonym but ended up deleting it due to lack of interest, but its something I'm so passionate about, the way people treat others "below" them.

Its dispicable the amount of times I've been spoken down to, or witness others doing the same to someone else. No one has the right.

Ha ha - you're so right.. Sometimes we do take our frustrations out on the poor old waiters! I have a golden rule though - If I'm going to complain I will return my food and not accept a new plate. I've heard so many stories of what the Chef's and waiters do behind closed door, to customers that do complain, that it's best to accept a shooter of sorts and put it down to experience.

I quit waitressing the same night i began shifts, because.. the client felt my ass. So I brought him his food (coincidentally, a pasta dish) and dumped it in his lap... and walked out.

@ExMi I apologise for my gross generalisation. To have birthed a fabulous creature such as yourself I am sure your mother must be an amazing person.

My experience is unfortunately such that I have encountered the worst of the worst and therefore have a very tarnished, if not somewhat skewed view, of restaurant managers.That said I have met a few nice ones - the same cannot be said for passport controllers though.

I like having my views positively changed and would love to meet your mom if the opportunity ever arises :)

@Chris I happened to have worked with waiters who choose it as a profession - this was in America though, a place where minimum wage is enforced and a 20% tip was automatically included on the bill.

Waiters are by no means second class citizens and I am definitely not trying to be patronizing. I agree that they have a role to fulfil and when they do it well I more often than not choose to return to that establishment.

What one cannot forget is that they are individuals with feelings who deserve to be treated with respect, acknowledged when they do their job well and politely reminded when they don't. I have often observed people in restaurants who could not even be bothered to thank a waiter when he brings them their food - as far as I'm concerned that's unacceptable.

Luckily I'm not friends with any such people, but I am acutely aware that I think about the ripple effect more than others - often to my detriment.

But a waiter does have to fulfill certain waiterly duties. For example, if a dish is going to arrive 25 minutes after everyone else's food, you'd expect to be notified? I'm sure all waiters are selfless, saintly Mother Theresas, but even she pointed out if someone was due to rot in hell.

Also, this idea that waiters are secondclass citizens doing a terrible job, and deserving of our pity - surely that's a little patronising? After all, why shouldn't someone choose to be a waiter because that's the job they want to do? Is it really much worse than, say being a domestic servant, or a clerk in a bank?

It's just a job, people, not a punishment from God.
